Family Fun Fridays

Join us for a night of socially distanced family fun presented by Winterthur and our DMNH partners. Put your heads together as you participate in trivia, quizzes, and creative activities. Gather up your art enthusiast, young and old, and head to the museum for an evening filled with laughter and learning as we explore different aspects of art through interactive games and challenges. Show your smarts as you participate in trivia and quizzes, then flex your creative muscles with hands-on art activities.

History will come to life for you and your favorite history buffs as you spend you evening learning at Winterthur! Put your heads together to complete quizzes, participate in interactive games based on historical events, and try your hands at some everyday activities from long ago.

Bring your family to Winterthur to spend an exciting evening together in the great outdoors! Nature enthusiast of all ages will learn and grow as your family works together to explore the gardens, complete scavenger hunts and other challenges, and learn all about the diverse environment that is unique to the Winterthur estate.

Discover a few of the ways we use science to learn more about the world around us. Become a citizen scientist as you complete outdoor challenges and scavenger hunts, and flex your scientific thinking as you create hypotheses and conduct experiments. Learn a little, too, about how the study of science and art intersect in the field of art conservation.

Learn more about the extraordinary qualities of water! Get creative with water-inspired art projects hands-on activities. Explore the water features on the Winterthur estate and discover a few essential creatures that inhabit those ecosystems.

Join us for an out-of-this-world evening of stargazing, meteor shower watching, and fun space-themed activities! Create your own travel poster for a far off planet and learn about some famous astronomers as well.
Fables, Folklore and Fairytales Concert

The young and the young-at-heart are invited to experience timeless tales and nursery rhymes set to music, including selections from Stephen Sondheim’s “Into the Woods,” performed by The Choir School of Delaware. You will hear your favorite fables, fairy tales, and nursery rhymes, but with a musical twist. Enjoy this whimsical performance, then come back for Enchanted Summer Day in June, when you’ll experience the magic of the “real” fairies themselves! Performance only: $35; $30 per Winterthur Member; $10 students (ages 12-18); Free (children 11 and under), Performance + General Admission: $50; $10 students (ages 12-18); Free (children 11 and under). Reservations encouraged. Rain date is June 6.
Cub Scout and Girl Scout Evening
March 19, 7:00–9:30 pm
The Delaware Museum of Natural History is partnering with organizations around the region to create a one-stop event to help your Girl Scouts and Cub Scouts fulfill requirements for their badges or adventures. Using a personalized itinerary based on their level, your Scout will engage with professionals from a wide range of organizations. Evening includes crafts, hikes, activities, and more. $10 per Scout; $10 per adult/family member. Registration required. Visit delmnh/events.
DMNH Spring Break Camp
Session 1: March 29–April 2; Session 2: April 5–9; Monday–Friday, 9:00 am–4:00 pm
Join us for an action-packed week of Spring Break Camp! Each day includes exploring a different science or nature topic through games, crafts, science experiments, live animal presentations, and adventures throughout the Winterthur grounds. Campers must bring a bag lunch, snacks, two filled water bottles, and face mask each day. Extended care is available for an additional fee. Story Time in Enchanted Woods
April 1 & April 15, May 6 & May 20, 11:00–11:30 am
Share the joy of reading while cultivating an interest in and appreciation for nature. Children can enjoy nature-based stories surrounded by the beauty of the Winterthur Garden. Intended for ages 3–6. Included with admission. Free for children under 2. Free for Winterthur and DMNH members.
Spring Fling for Families
April 6–9, 11:00 am–3:00 pm
Drop in during spring break week and make your way to Enchanted Woods, a fairy-tale magical landscape for playful music, crafts, and games.

DMNH Summer Camp Fair
Discover something different for your children to do this summer by connecting with many of the premiere summer camp organizations in the area. Free for guests. Pre-registration required. Rain or Shine

Come learn about interesting aspects of weather, like how we predict it, how we fight against natural disasters, and how the weather can damage the objects around you. Included with admission. April 3, 10:00 am–3:00 pm
Join us for egg-citing experiments, crafts, story times, and specimen show-and-tells. While you are here, pick up an Easter Brunch Box with favorites from our classic brunch buffet to enjoy at home. Each box serves 2–4. $85 per box; $78 for Members. Reserve by March 26 for pick up on April 3 or 4. Included with admission. Free for Winterthur and DMNH members. Flora and Fauna
May 1, 10:00 am–3:00 pm
Explore flora and fauna in art and nature. We’ll learn about habitats, life cycles, and growing patterns, and even experience Delaware’s amazing wildlife firsthand with live animal ambassadors. Included with admission. Free for Winterthur and DMNH members. Winterthur and DMNH present experiments and activities along with other community partners.
Every Family has a teacher. Guardians and parents are the first teachers. At this moment many families are finding that they are contributing more heavily to their children’s education. Connect with other families who are engaged with virtual learning, homeschooling, and edu–pods as well as the many resources Winterthur has to offer. Together we will look at flexible and progressive approaches for teaching and supporting learners of all ages. Free!
Sensory Friendly Access Morning
Sunday, July 11, 9:00–10:30 am
Before other visitors arrive on the grounds at 10:00 am, the galleries will be open for visitors with sensory needs for a low sensory experience. After families have a chance to engage in a self-guided tour of the galleries, complete with gallery games to utilize for an enhanced experience, join us in the conveniently located activity room for a craft activity. Our activities are hands-on, COVID- friendly, and perfect for learners with a range of needs and cognitive abilities. Pre-registration required. $30 per family. Free for DMNH and Winterthur Members. Time Traveler's Tour
Learn about the lifestyle of the du Pont family while exploring rooms in their house and (weather permitting) garden spaces where they played, worked, and entertained. Designed especially for families with children ages 4–11. 45 min.; 10 person limit. Included with admission, by request.
The Touch-it Room
Travel back in time to this delightful kid-oriented space where everything is touchable! Host an imaginary tea party, cook at the open hearth, or shop at the general store. Seasonal hours. Included with admission.
Pick up a Preschool Pack from the Galleries Reception Desk the next time you and your family visit the Galleries. Each of the four packs includes stories, puzzles, and games on a different theme. Discover and learn with hands-on activities that bring the museum’s objects to life! Included with admission.
Enchanted Woods Backpacks
Filled with scavenger hunts, journals, magnifying glasses, and more, these backpacks offer great ways to explore Enchanted Woods. Borrow one from the Galleries Reception Desk before you head outside, or, during the summer months, pick up one from a volunteer stationed in Enchanted Woods. Included with admission.
