Commissioned by Samuel Shaw, the first American merchant to trade with China, 302 pieces of the service were produced and later procured for George Washington in 1786. This well-travelled set of porcelain was used during his presidency in the official residences in New York and Philadelphia, and during his retirement years at Mount Vernon. Following Washington’s death in 1799, the service went on a journey passing through the hands of family members and friends; eventually 74 pieces were acquired by Henry Francis du Pont and are on permanent display at Winterthur.
