Naturally-Dyed Silk Scarves, August 14
Create your own colorfully patterned silk scarf, beginning with the mordanting process and using a variety of natural dyes (such as indigo and madder) and folding techniques. Take home a wearable masterpiece. Registration required. $60; $50 for Winterthur and DMNH members
Botanical Cyanotypes: Using Nature to Create Art, September 11
Using cyanotype, the oldest photographic technique, artist Sarah Bourne Rafferty of Atwater Designs will walk you through each step of this transforming process: gathering, composing, exposing, and developing botanical images created with the rays of the sun. Needle-felted Succulents in Ceramic Vessels, October 23
Learn how to create small (3-5″ tall) needle felted succulent sculptures, using thin wire and dyed wool roving, with artist Marsha Minutella. Registration required. $65; $60 for Winterthur and DMNH members. Virtual participation avialable for an additional $9 if you register by October 10.
Electric Rug Tufting, November 6
Design and fabricate a 24 x 24″ rug or wall-hanging using wool yards and an electric tufting machine, under the guidance of Tim Eads, an internationally recognized artist and designer. All materials are provided, and available for purchase, should you catch the rug-tufting bug. Registration required by November 3. $125; $100 for Winterthur and DMNH members.
Three Rings, One Class, December 4
Learn three different techniques for making fun, fashionable rings featuring stamped aluminum, wire, and beads in this workshop led by jewelry designer Gilda Jennings. Each ring is adjustable or fit to size using a ring mandrel, and customized to reflect the wearer’s personality, making this the perfect project for the season of giving. All materials and use of tools are provided, but students are welcome to bring their own needle nose pliers, chain nosed pliers, and wire cutters if they prefer.
