
Unraveling ‘The Cause of Much Chagrin’: Multidisciplinary Approaches to Historic Shark and Ray Exploitation through Marine Shagreen Museum Objects
Dr. Rachel M. Winter will speak about her ongoing research into identifying the seas and species exploited to produce marine shagreen using nearly two dozen objects in Winterthur’s collections she studied in consultation with Winterthur scientists, conservators, and curators. Dr. Winter’s project “‘The Cause of Much Chagrin’: Marine Shagreen as a Tool for Elasmobranch Historical Ecology,” was funded by a National Endowment for the Humanities Postdoctoral Fellowship at Winterthur in 2025.
