Lecture: “Which Yankees, Whose Traditions, What Objects”

Since 1976 there has been a veritable explosion of publication about the arts of New England. This lecture by Charles F. Hummel, Curator Emeritus, Winterthur is an overview of the arts of that complex region of “yankeeland,” known as New England. For the most part, museums and books present to the public elite examples of New England regional architecture, paintings, costumes and upholstery, urban furniture, China Trade porcelains, silver, wallpaper, gravestones, and brass objects. To provide some balance, selections for this overview also include common redwares, other products of local potters, paintings and graphics, glass, pewter, iron, tools, leather objects, needlework, machinery, rural furniture, and woodenware. Join us for a fun day celebrating the opening of Costuming THE CROWN From the dazzling gold of Queen Elizabeth’s coronation robe to the simple sophistication of Princess Margaret’s wedding dress, from the majesty of royal crowns and tiaras to the comfort of clothes worn in private family moments, Costuming THE CROWN will feature 40 iconic costumes from the beloved Emmy® award-winning Netflix series, a dramatized history of the reign of Queen Elizabeth II.

"Behind the Seams" lecture  is Members free, two nonmember guests per Member allowed. $15 per nonmember.  Panel Discussion is $30 per Member. $40 per nonmember. $20 per student with ID. Reservations required. Please call 302.888.4600 to reserve your spot.
