Color Counts
Henry Francis du Pont’s colorful dinner tables were designed like stage sets. He meticulously arranged greenhouse and field-grown flowers, amethyst, ruby, cobalt, and green glassware, custom-dyed table linens, and his 54 sets of china. The table designs he liked the most were carefully recorded into notebooks from the beginning of the 20th century until his death in 1969. This exhibition underscores H. F. du Pont’s extraordinary sensitivity to color whether it was in the garden, the collection, his interior designs, or in his entertaining. As he reminded an interviewer in 1962, “I think color is the thing that really counts more than any other.”
