These helpful answers and explanations of Group Tour and museum policies will allow you to make the most of your visit to Winterthur.
1. How far in advance do I need to book my group tour?
We recommend that you book well in advance to ensure you can get a reservation; however we try our best to accommodate short-notice tours as well. Group tours are available through advanced reservation only. Please contact our Winterthur Information and Tours Office at least one week in advance of your group tour by calling 800.448.3883, or e-mail us at email@example.com.
2. How do I get to Winterthur? Can I go through the main entrance with a large-sized bus?
Winterthur is easily reached via Interstate 95. For detailed directions, visit Hours & Directions page. We also recommend if you are using a GPS or other satellite mapping device, such as a smart phone, that you use this address: 5105 Kennett Pike, Wilmington, DE 19807. Buses should always come in the front gate of Winterthur, which is accessible from Route 52 (5105 Kennett Pike).
3. How many people can you accommodate in a group tour?
We can accommodate up to 60 people per half hour for the guided introductory tours and up to 75 per half hour during Yuletide at Winterthur.
4. Do you offer group tours year round?
Winterthur is open from March 1 through the first week in January, when we close for our seasonal closing. During spring, summer, fall, and early winter, we can accommodate group tours daily. Please note: guided house tours are not available mid-November (generally 2nd & 3rd weeks) due to installation of our annual Yuletide Tour. Winterthur is closed to the public on Mondays, except during Yuletide.
5. Can you accommodate guests with mobility challenges?
Most of our buildings are accessible for persons with disabilities, but not all areas of the house can accommodate wheelchairs. The garden is accessible for wheelchairs. Your Group Tours contact will work with you to create a tour experience that accommodates all of your group’s needs and provides a wonderful experience.
6. Do you offer group tours for children and students?
Yes, we have a wonderful school program that offers group tours for children. Please visit our on-site school programs page for more information. In addition, we offer off-site school programs at various schools throughout the region.
7. Is there ample motor coach parking on site?
Yes, there is ample parking on site for your motor coach.
8. Are there lunch options available?
Yes, we have a full-service high quality, cafeteria-style restaurant in our Visitor Center Garden Café. Lunch vouchers, boxed lunches, and seated meals are also available. We will put you in contact with our caterer, Restaurant Associates, for dining information.
9. How much do group tours cost?
General Admission for group tours (March–early November) is $17 per person.
10. How do I reserve a group tour?
Group tours are available through advanced reservation only. Please contact our Winterthur Information and Tours Office at least 4–6 weeks in advance of your desired tour date by calling 800.448.3883, or e-mail us at firstname.lastname@example.org several possible dates and times you would like to visit. We will be happy to work with you to set up an itinerary.
11. What happens if I have to cancel our group tour?
Refunds are given up to one week before the visit. We are always happy to try and reschedule your visit.
12. Is there a best time of year to visit Winterthur?
Every time of the year at Winterthur is a great time to visit. The Winterthur Garden is beautiful throughout the spring, summer, and fall, with a succession of bloom and stunning foliage, while winter provides a beautiful, serene landscape. House tours and special exhibitions are available all year while we’re open, and in the winter, our beloved Yuletide Tour is a favorite among our guests. 13. Can I make a reservation for the Garden Tram?
No, the Garden Tram is available on a first-come, first-served basis. Trams depart frequently, weather-permitting, between 10:00 am–4:00 pm.
14. How much time should we plan for our visit?
You should plan for 3 to 4 hours with additional time if dining in the café. Groups should also plan to arrive 30–45 minutes before scheduled tour to allow time for check-in.
15. What happens if our group numbers drop below 15?
We can still accommodate your group, but standard admission rates apply: $20 per adult; $18 per senior.
16. Are deposits required to book a tour?
No, Winterthur does not require deposits. However, full payment is due one week in advance of your scheduled visit.
17. Can I pay upon arrival?
No, final payment and final group numbers are due one week prior to the visit.
18. How do I pay?
Checks made payable to Winterthur can be mailed to the Winterthur Information and Tours Office, 5105 Kennett Pike, Winterthur, DE 19735. We also accept Visa, MasterCard, Discover, and AMEX over the phone by calling 800.448.3883, x7029. (Please note that dining payments should be arranged directly with Restaurant Associates).
19. Will I have to check my bags, or can I bring them with me into the Winterthur Galleries and on the house tours?
There is a coat room and lockers at the museum to store personal items. Umbrellas, shopping bags, and backpacks must be checked in a locker and are not permitted on house tours. Purses, briefcases, and other large personal items are not allowed to accompany guests on Reserved Tours, custom or private house tours. Notebooks and pencils are permitted on house tours; pens and markers are prohibited.
20. Is it possible to take photographs or videotape in the museum and garden?
