Discover the intertwined lives of three forgotten artists: Robert Edge Pine\, Prince Demah\, and Patience Wright. They defied the British monarchy\, armed with paint\, canvas\, activism\, and espionage\, while risking their lives and reputations to declare independence. SUMMARY:America’s Tapestry Project Demonstration
DESCRIPTION:Be a part of America’s 250th anniversary. America’s Tapestry is a project featuring 13 hand-embroidered panels\, one for each of the original colonies\, illustrating the diverse stories of individual contributions–many overlooked–that reveal the struggle for Independence. Panels are created by talented artisans from New Hampshire to Georgia. The Delaware tapestry captures a pivotal moment in the American Revolution\, highlighting the heroism of Major Henry Fisher\, known as the “eyes and ears” of the Revolution. Fisher is depicted firing a signal gun\, alerting Patriot forces to the approach of an enemy ship near the Delaware Bay. Visitors are invited to contribute stitches to the tapestry and observe stitchers as they work. Included with admission. Members free. \nAmerica’s Tapestry will also be at Winterthur on September 21\, October 26\, November 19\, December 17\, March 14\, and April 1.

SUMMARY:America’s Tapestry Project Demonstration
DESCRIPTION:Be a part of America’s 250th anniversary. America’s Tapestry is a project featuring 13 hand-embroidered panels\, one for each of the original colonies\, illustrating the diverse stories of individual contributions–many overlooked–that reveal the struggle for Independence. Panels are created by talented artisans from New Hampshire to Georgia. The Delaware tapestry captures a pivotal moment in the American Revolution\, highlighting the heroism of Major Henry Fisher\, known as the “eyes and ears” of the Revolution. Fisher is depicted firing a signal gun\, alerting Patriot forces to the approach of an enemy ship near the Delaware Bay. Visitors are invited to contribute stitches to the tapestry and observe stitchers as they work. Included with admission. Members free. \nAmerica’s Tapestry will also be at Winterthur on August 6 and 13; September 21; October 26; November 19; December 17; March 14; and April 1.

Wilson. DESCRIPTION:Explore the imaginative and interpretive aspects of the essay that inspired Almost Unknown\, The Afric-American Picture Gallery exhibition in this four-module virtual course with guest curator Dr. Jonathan Michael Square. \n“The Afric-American Picture Gallery” was written in 1859 by free black journalist and educator William J. Wilson. The exhibition\, on view May 3\, 2025–January 4\, 2026\, takes visitors on a tour of Wilson’s imagined gallery of drawings\, paintings\, sculptures\, and objects representing Black life in the United States and across the Diaspora\, as interpreted by Square.  \nOver the course of four modules\, participants will: \n\n	summarize Wilson’s prose in the context of 19th-century culture and contemporary literature;\n	explore the curatorial process of selecting collections objects for Winterthur’s exhibition through discussion and behind-the-scenes images;\n	choose to: a) share your understanding of a select reading from the provided bibliography\, or b) describe an object you would have included in the exhibition;\n	create and contribute to a diverse learning experience.\n\nJune 4: Explore “The Afric-American Picture Gallery” essay \nJune 11: Investigate the curatorial process of the exhibition \nJune 18: Engage in a student-led discussion guided by Jonathan Michael Square \nJune 25: Present final thoughts and wrap-up session \nParticipants in the virtual course may take an in-person tour of Almost Unknown: The Afric-American Picture Gallery led by Jonathan Michael Square on June 30 at 10:30 a.m. \nJonathan Michael Square\, Ph.D.\, is the guest curator of Almost Unknown: The Afric-American Picture Gallery. He is assistant professor of Black Visual Culture at Parsons School of Design and a writer\, historian\, and curator of Afro-Diasporic fashion and visual culture. \nClasses will take place on Zoom. Limited to 15 students. Students are encouraged to take part in all four modules. Access to the module recordings\, suggested bibliography\, and study guide included. $100 per participant. Scholarships available. DESCRIPTION:In celebration of Winterthur’s newest exhibition Almost Unknown\, The Afric-American Picture Gallery\, enjoy chamber music performed by musicians from the Kennett Symphony. They will perform William Grant Still’s Lyric Quartette\, “The Sentimental One\,” “The Quiet One\,” and “The Jovial One.” Still was one of the most important African American composers of the 20th century. Composed in 1960\, the quartette describes three of his friends.    \nThe second part of the performance is Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart’s String Quartet No. 14 in G major. Composed in 1782\, it is often called “Spring Quartet” because of its warm and sunny nature. $25; $20 for Members. $15 for students.
