SUMMARY:Look & Learn: An Introduction to American Furniture of the 18th and the Early 19th Centuries
DESCRIPTION:This new course introduces participants to the objects\, materials\, and tools of a specific era. You will develop skills in identifying\, assessing\, and contextualizing furniture through visual analysis. The program also includes a guided visit to the Delaware Antiques Show for a curated preview of items. \nEach session builds on the last\, deepening understanding and appreciation of American furniture from the 18th and early 19th centuries. No homework is required\, and all study materials and supplies are provided. \nThe series is taught by Brock Jobe\, professor emeritus of American decorative arts\, and Gregory Landrey\, senior furniture conservator emeritus and affiliated associate professor. \n\n	Session One: October 11\n\nLearn how to look for and what to consider when examining a piece of American furniture of the 18th and early 19th centuries. Get an introduction to materials\, including woods\, hardware\, glue\, and upholstery goods as well as woodworking tools. \n\n	Session Two: October 18\n\nSee demonstrations and join the discussion about joinery\, cabinetmaking\, and chairmaking; turning and carving; and veneering and inlay. \n\n	Session Three: October 25\n\nGet an introduction to furniture tastemakers and design sources\, including original 18th and early 19th century English and French design books\, plus a summary of American furniture styles and regionalism in urban American furniture. \n\n	Session Four: November 1\n\nWatch a demonstration and join the discussion about clear finishes; and learn about the most common alterations\, damage\, and repairs to furniture and how to assess an object’s current condition. This session will also include an opportunity for up to four participants to bring in an object to the course for all to examine and discuss. \n\n	Saturday\, November 8 at the Delaware Antiques Show\, The Chase Center on the Riverfront\, Wilmington\, DE.\n\nTake a small group tour of the show\, focusing on furniture in the booths of selected dealers.  \nFee includes admission to the Delaware Antiques Show on November 8. $100; $80 for Members. \nSold out.
