SUMMARY:A Story of Early American Painting Virtual Lecture Series
DESCRIPTION:This course\, presented by Kedra Kearis\, associate curator of art and visual culture\, and offered by the Barnes Foundation\, is an introduction to early American painting from the colonial period through the 19th century. Examples will be drawn from Winterthur’s collection of paintings\, prints\, and wallpapers. What do these works tell us about the tensions and growing alliances between the newly independent United States and former ruler England and new ally France? We will consider examples like an early 1700s painting by Henrietta Dering Johnston\, one of the first professional woman artists in the American colonies\, and an 1857 painting by Thomas Waterman Wood that depicts a free Black professional in Baltimore on the eve of the Civil War. Throughout the course\, we’ll discuss how the display of these artworks in Winterthur’s rooms and galleries influences their meaning. This lecture series takes place weekly through October 3. $220; Winterthur Members save 10% on registration fee. Email MembershipInfo@winterthur.org to receive the discount code. \nLearn more and register at the Barnes Foundation.

SUMMARY:America’s Tapestry Project Demonstration
DESCRIPTION:Be a part of America’s 250th anniversary. America’s Tapestry is a project featuring 13 hand-embroidered panels\, one for each of the original colonies\, illustrating the diverse stories of individual contributions–many overlooked–that reveal the struggle for Independence. Panels are created by talented artisans from New Hampshire to Georgia. The Delaware tapestry captures a pivotal moment in the American Revolution\, highlighting the heroism of Major Henry Fisher\, known as the “eyes and ears” of the Revolution. Fisher is depicted firing a signal gun\, alerting Patriot forces to the approach of an enemy ship near the Delaware Bay. Visitors are invited to contribute stitches to the tapestry and observe stitchers as they work. Included with admission. Members free. \nAmerica’s Tapestry will also be at Winterthur on October 26\, November 19\, December 17\, March 14\, and April 1.
