Ashley and Christopher will discuss themes present in both of their recent publications and offer insight into creating, caring for, and entertaining in your own beautiful home.
Described as the “neo-traditionalist,” Ashley Whittaker’s work reveals fresh and modern perspectives on traditional design and architecture. She is listed on Elle Décor’s A-List of top designers. Her work has been published in The New York Times, Veranda, Southern Living, Coastal Living, Domino, and on the cover of House Beautiful six times. She credits her training in the design industry to legendary decorator Markham Roberts, who she worked for before starting out on her own in 2006. Her work includes projects in New York, Connecticut, Rhode Island, Florida, California, and Montana. She is the author of The Well-Loved House: Creating Homes with Color, Comfort, and Drama (Rizzoli 2021).
Christopher Spitzmiller
Chris Spitzmiller creates ceramic lamps inspired by classical forms and traditional gemlike glazes. His work is often featured Architectural Digest, Town & Country, Elle Décor, Veranda, The New York Times, and The Wall Street Journal. He has had the honor of making lamps for the Oval Office for the past four White House administrations, as well Blair House and many other distinguished American homes. He is author of A Year at Clove Brook Farm: Gardening, Tending Flocks, Keeping Bees, Collecting Antiques, and Entertaining Friends (Rizzoli 2021).

Rediscovering the Formula: Interpreting a Stenciled Pelerine in the Winterthur Collection

Winterthur is home to a possible 19th-century pelerine (a cape-like collar) embellished with stenciled and embroidered botanical motifs. Two centuries after its creation, this wonderful and mysterious garment continues to confound experts, stretching how we understand 19th-century fashion, craft, and identity. Through historical and scientific analysis, Reynolds investigates how material culture scholars can rediscover and interpret the hands, minds, and “formulas” behind the textile’s creation.
A Long Space Race: Contextualizing Early (Human) Flight in Eighteenth-Century Material Culture
Ethan Snyder, Lois F. McNeil Fellow, Winterthur
Snyder explores the presentation of human hopes and fears through a plate that depicts Vincenzo Lunardi’s ballooning in the late 18th century and connects them to the burgeoning global network of 18th-century capitalism, the space race of the Cold War, and the current billionaire space race, as well as issues of individualism, climate, and the future of humanity, and capitalism.
