SUMMARY:Curators’ Salon Series
DESCRIPTION:George Washington’s Society of the Cincinnati Dinner Service \nExplore and uncover stories of remarkable examples of craftsmanship and artistry from our iconic decorative arts collection\, guided by Winterthur’s experts. Afterward\, enjoy a wine and cheese reception.  \nCommissioned by Samuel Shaw\, the first American merchant to trade with China\, 302 pieces of the service were produced and later procured for George Washington in 1786. This well-travelled set of porcelain was used during his presidency in the official residences in New York and Philadelphia\, and during his retirement years at Mount Vernon. Following Washington’s death in 1799\, the service went on a journey passing through the hands of family members and friends; eventually 74 pieces were acquired by Henry Francis du Pont and are on permanent display at Winterthur.  \nLearn more about this gem of the collection as Luke Pecoraro\, curator of ceramics and glass\, guides you on the path of production and use from China to the new American republic. Participants will have the opportunity to closely examine several pieces of the service and other objects from the collection that tell the story of the first President’s material world and new research into the “missing pieces” of the set. $85; $75 for Members. Reservations required. Capacity limited. \nRegister now. \nJoin us for an additional Curators’ Salon Series on October 11.
