Chris Strand, Winterthur's director of the garden and estate, provides a first-hand account of last fall’s WGLS trip to South Africa.

Discoveries

Last autumn, members of the Winterthur Garden & Landscape Society enjoyed a second spring. As Winterthur’s director of the garden and estate, I had the opportunity to travel with several WGLS members to join Winterthur Trustee (and WGLS member) Rod Ward for a two-week odyssey that explored the rich flora and unique gardens of South Africa. Along the way, we were introduced to the culture, history, fine wine, and hospitality for which South Africa is well-known. An added bonus was the chance to experience spring a second time, with dogwoods and daffodils flowering alongside rare African proteas and birds of paradise.
