Special Needs Access

Winterthur welcomes all visitors and offers accessible facilities and programs.

Parking
Vehicles with official permits may use designated parking spaces next to the Visitor Center and near the Galleries Reception Area.

Transportation to the Museum
During regular public hours, a shuttle stops at the Visitor Center, the Museum Store, and the Museum entrance. The bus is equipped with a hydraulic lift and one wheelchair securement device.

Garden Access
To access most of the Winterthur Garden, please pick up a Visitor Guide on-site and follow the marked routes on the garden map. Most of the year, visitors can board trams for half-hour tours of the garden. All trams are equipped with ramps and wheelchair securement devices.

For individuals with limited mobility, including wheelchair users, the Garden Tram is available to transport you to and from Enchanted WoodsTM. Please let a Garden Guide or Visitor Service Assistant know that you would like to visit Enchanted WoodsTM so they can be ready to assist you. The daily Garden Tram schedule is posted in the Galleries Reception Area.

Wheelchair Access
Wheelchairs are available at the Visitor Center, the Galleries Reception Area, and the Museum Store.

Despite Winterthur's hilly site, most public areas and historic buildings are accessible. The garden map in the Visitor Guide (available on-site) identifies accessible areas and more steeply graded paths. A more detailed description of physical access is available. Please contact the Winterthur Information and Tours Office at 800.448.3883, 302.888.4600, TTY 302.888.4907.

Auxiliary Aids
Assistive listening systems are available for guided tours and special presentations. With at least one week's notice, a sign-language interpreter can be hired for your visit.

  • Guided tours that include detailed verbal descriptions are available, with advance reservations.
  • High-contrast photographs and/or large-print scripts are available for selected exhibitions or audio tours.
  • Demonstration objects are available for touching in the Galleries and in the Touch-It Room.
  • Guide and helping animals are welcome.

School, college, and adult programs can be adapted to specific needs by prior arrangement. Call for further information: 800.448-3883, 302.888.4600, TTY 302.888.4907.
