Life of an Apprentice

Welcome to Life of an Apprentice! Our game is a story about what it was like to grow up in Boston, Massachusetts, in the late 1700s. But this isn’t just a story that you read—you also help write it by deciding what happens next! At many times in the story, you can make choices about what our character does that will change his life. You might end up as a fur trader, a runaway, or a rich and successful businessman! You will also earn or spend shillings, and the amount of money you have will help decide what you can do.
Here’s how it works:
At the top of your screen you can read each part of the story.

Click . . .

On words in red to find out what they mean.

On pictures to learn more about what you see.

On choices to move to the next step in the story.

On Life of an Apprentice logo to start over.

Look . . .

At the top right to find out how much money you have.

Learn . . .

More about life in the past. Some parts of our story will probably surprise you—life was very different long ago. A Times Have Changed window will sometimes open to tell you more.

By the way . . . The story is illustrated with pictures and objects from Winterthur Museum, Garden & Library.  Winterthur collects things used in America between the mid-1600s (the time of the Pilgrims) and the mid-1800s (the time of Abraham Lincoln) and displays them on a country estate that used to belong to a man named Henry Francis du Pont.  Come visit us near Wilmington, Delaware, and see our collection in person!
