Saturday, October 13, 9:30 am–4:00 pm

Winterthur Members are invited to register for a unique day trip exploring Rose Valley, an Arts and Crafts community founded in 1901 by William Lightfoot Price.  The day will begin at 9:30am at Winterthur with a short overview of the Arts and Crafts movement and utopian communities, led by Thomas Guiler, PhD, Assistant Professor of History and Public Humanities at Winterthur.  The morning at Winterthur will also include a show and tell of library materials, with a particular focus on materials relating to Rose Valley and it’s residents and artwork.

Upcoming Lectures:

“The Rise of the West End: London, the Season, and Shopping”

St James's Square, 1720-1730. Published by John Bowles. Print by Sutton Nicholls. British Museum, 1880,1113.2199

Wednesday, September, 12

5:00 pm, Copeland Lecture Hall

After 1689, political families clustered in a small segment of London, making the capital their seasonal home. As purveyors of fashionable goods, such as gunshops, wine merchants, and hatters, opened next to the clubs and townhouses of leading ministers, they targeted the elite traffic between visits, court, and Parliament. Shopping en route became routine, and the streets, squares, and parks of St. James’s soon became a fashion runway. Join Amanda Vickery Professor of Early Modern History, Queen Mary University of London, as she explores the rapid transformation of the West End of London into a fashion capital. This special lecture is open to Winterthur Members and presented in conjunction with the Queen Mary University of London and University of Delaware Material Culture Exchange. Members free. Close to the public. Reservations suggested, please call 302.888.4600.
