Silversmiths to the Nation

July 4, 2008 - September 21, 2008

Don't miss this summer blockbuster! Opening day at Winterthur set a new record for attendance and continues the tremendous appeal of this spectacular showcase of American silver. Winterthur proudly presents Silversmiths to the Nation: Thomas Fletcher & Sidney Gardiner, 1808 - 1842, a remarkable exhibition capturing the patriotic fervor of the times in which Thomas Fletcher and Sidney Gardiner rose to prominence as America's premier silversmiths. Renowned for their dramatic presentation pieces for civic and military heroes as well as stylish household silver and jewelry, Fletcher & Gardiner created an impressive array of stunning silver works, including swords, medals, commemorative works, tea sets, pitchers, dinner services, a candelabrum, vases, and flatware in silver and gold. This exhibition premiered at The Metropolitan Museum of Art where more than 185,000 visitors marvelled at the bold and brilliant designs that elevated the American silversmith trade to new heights.
