Cream silk high-waisted dress with low neckline and long fitted sleeves, more full at the top. Overdress of silvery organza slit at the front and decorated with embroidered metalwork flowers and pearls. Large wings of very fine net.

Cate Blanchett as Young Elizabeth I, Period ca. 1555
Sage green velvet dancing dress. Velvet bodice, panels tied with cord at the back. Full silk skirt. Gauze sleeves with cream silk undersleeves with pink and green floral embroidery. Beige silk tasseled cord attaching deep salmon-pink flowing sash. Cream gauze fill in with black embroidery on shoulders and thin colored band of embroidery around neck. Accented with pearl choker with pearl fringing.

Swoosie Kurtz as Madame de Volanges, 1760
Sack back gown of rose pink silk printed with silver trailing rose design. Double sleeve ruffles with cream lace undersleeves. Cuffs decorated with gold lace and small peach silk ribbon roses and pink and green fly fringe. Wide gold lace and ribbon rose robings. Stomacher of ruched green/pink shot silk decorated with frayed fabric ribbons and rosettes. Petticoat of green/pink shot silk decorated with ruched bands of self-fabric with frayed edges and frayed fabric rosettes with deep flounce at hem.

Mildred Natwick as Madame de Rosemonde, 1760

Brown floral printed silk sack back gown. Three-quarter sleeves with pleated cuffs and cream lace ruffles. Slate grey/blue silk stomacher decorated with gold thread and beads with large bow, edged in dull gold braid, at center front. Low square neck edged with cream lace. Robings of self-colored fabric and tiny gold beads. Petticoat of slate grey/blue silk with self-colored flounces and ruched fabric. Costume design by James Acheson

Michael Lonsdale as King Louis XVI, 1780s
Pale mauve velvet frock coat with embroidered green leaves and gold grasses down front, cuffs, and above pockets. Very large buttons of gold braid and pearls. Pale mauve velvet breeches. Ivory silk waistcoat finely embroidered with repeated floral design in pale green and mauve with larger rambling flower design along hem and front opening and over pocket flaps. Covered embroidered buttons. Cream shirt and cravat.

6. Jefferson in Paris
Greta Scacchi as Maria Cosway, 1780s
Two-piece riding habit of sage green silk. Fitted jacket-style bodice with faux waistcoat with large lapels, short at front with tail at back. Embroidered round edges of opening, lapels, and cuffs with small beige floral design and sequins. Covered and embroidered buttons. Skirt of grosgrain pleated onto waistband. Worn over matching petticoat of padded silk.

Kate Winslet as Marianne Dashwood, 1800

Wedding dress. One-piece cream mesh fabric with straw worked standing collar and long trained skirt bordered with open work straw braid, heavy gold and silver beading over cream gauze underskirt studded with tiny silver stars. Cream full-length petticoat. Lace bonnet and veil with small flowers.

8. Sense and Sensibility
Alan Rickman as Colonel Brandon, 1800
Groom's costume. Red wool jacket with tails, green cuffs, and center front. Gold brocade and buttons, gold epaulet. Beige trousers with wooden buttons. White linen shirt, black stock, and deep red sash. Black Hessian boots.

One-piece evening dress. Bright orange high-waisted gauze dress with silk underskirt. Low neck overlaid with gold lace and edged with gold braid. Finely checked gold gauze pelisse bordered with gold braid. Orange belt with oval gilt buckle.

Three-piece evening outfit. Black wool breeches. Black wool frock coat with black and silver embroidered buttons. Cream silk jacquard waistcoat with embroidered buttons. Cream linen shirt and cravat.

Gwyneth Paltrow as Emma, 1810
Wedding dress. Empire line dress of cream silk embroidered with very small regular design. Short sleeves of cream floral-embroidered net. Low neck edged with scalloped, embroidered cream net. Very small rosette of fine ribbon and pearls. Buttons at back, very slightly trained. Veil of cream embroidered net.

Liv Tyler as Tatyana, Period ca. 1836

One-piece dress. Red satin, bodice with low neck; separate pleated diagonal bands running front to back over each shoulder forming a V shape at front. Covered button trim, back fastening, pointed centre back waist. Very full above elbow-length puffed sleeves of matching shot silk with large pointed petal-shaped satin epaulettes. Skirt pleated into waist around sides and back. Dull gold necklace set with red jewels

Ralph Fiennes as Evgeny, 1830s
Fitted overcoat of black wool with large black velvet lapels. Double-breasted with velvet-covered buttons. Lined with intricately quilted, embroidered silk. Black tailcoat and trousers. Cream linen shirt with frill front and cream cravat. Blue velvet fill-in and cream and grey waistcoat. Top hat.

Grey silk dress with full-flounced three-tiered skirt overlaid with black lace. Bodice pointed at center front. Low round neck with wide black net ruffle and edged with cream lace frill. Short sleeves of black net.

15. Scarlett
Joanne Whalley-Kilmer as Scarlett O'Hara, 1870s

Two-piece dress of aqua silk overlaid with black floral net. Short fitted bodice with very short sleeves. Low neckline trimmed with frayed ruched aqua silk and thin purple ribbon. Large corsage on left breast of deep red, purple, and green silk and velvet flowers. Fastened at center front with small glass buttons. Skirt full at back and slightly trained with band of pleated silk at hem. Black net overskirt caught up at back with silk and velvet flowers.

Joanne Whalley-Kilmer as Scarlett O'Hara, 1870s

Two-piece dress. Fitted bodice continuing to form over skirt of black/brown silk brocade with pink green and gold floral design and edged with wide band of black lace. Low square neckline edged with gold lace. Three-quarter sleeves decorated with bands of lace and with ruffle of gold lace at cuff. Gold silk bow at back of dress. Underskirt with panels of gold silk and very wide bands of ruched gold silk around hem.

Nicole Kidman as Isabel Archer, 1876-79

Two-piece evening dress of gold lamé overlaid with black and gold net. Long-line fitted bodice of diagonally patterned gold net over diagonally gold-embroidered lamé with low, wide neck edged with band of heavily black-beaded black net over gold. Very short cap sleeves of black-beaded black net. Two long black satin streamers decorated with black and gold sequins from center back of bodice. Straight skirt of vertically striped black net over gold lamé with appliqué beaded trailing flowers at hem. Very long train of black silk overlaid with layers of gold net caught up at back. Square end of train decorated with gold floral embroidery and sequins. Underlayers of pleated black silk around edge.

18. The Portrait of a Lady
Nicole Kidman as Isabel Archer, 1876-79

Two-piece outfit with trained skirt of purple silk moiré. Apron front caught up at back, edged with long silk tassels and an underlayer of pleating. Princess line bodice with heavily embroidered central front, cuffs, pocket flaps, and back neck in navy, purple, and gold. Buttons also embroidered in gold.







19. Toscanini
Elizabeth Taylor as Nadina Bulichoff, 1880s

Aida costume. Two-piece dress of purple striped silk with additional metallic pattern and other fabrics, heavily encrusted with beads, sequins, and large brightly colored stones in gold mounts. Overdress with low neck, front fastening, and short pannier-style bustle back with long striped green train, short sleeves with long tight jersey undersleeves. Underskirt with jeweled center front panel and silver patterned hem. Ornate jeweled and feathered headdress.

Two-piece dress with pale blue/green satin bodice with low neck, narrow triangular center front panel of gathered pale tulle bordered with bands of mustard/dark wine red/gray embroidery, which continue around back neck, back fastening. Very short embroidered and tulle sleeves. Skirt overlaid at front and back with pale tulle with embroidered side panels and front hem.

Wedding dress. Two-piece of cream silk jacquard. Fitted bodice closing at front with glass buttons and with green self-striped silk trim at neck and cuffs. Skirt with long fishtail train lined with pleated green silk. Worn with gold tiara and net veil.

Two-piece evening gown of pale apricot satin with cream Russian lace. Low V neck filled in with ruched cream net. Elbow-length sleeves of heavy cream lace. Cream lace panels across bodice. Pale green velvet bow with floral "diamond" brooch at center on left shoulder and center front. Trained skirt with cream lace panels. Matching velvet belt with three diamante buttons at center.

Two-piece evening dress of black net over lemon silk overlaid with panels of silver lace. Trail of lemon chiffon appliqué flowers decorated with gold sequins trailing from right shoulder across bodice and down left of skirt. Lemon silk roses at right shoulder, floral "diamond" brooch at center front. Full sleeves gathered at elbow with gold lace ruffled cuffs. Trained skirt. Black satin belt.

Two-piece day outfit. Blouse of cream silk voile with appliquéd lavender leaves and white embroidered stalks gathered onto lavender silk pleated waistband. Attached high-necked fill-in of cream broiderie anglais. Three-quarter sleeves full at the top of ruched fabric with cuff of cream broiderie anglais and cream lace ruffle. Slightly trained skirt of lavender blue silk with band of cream at hem.

Two-piece evening dress. Beige net over gold open-work striped fabric lined with light coffee-colored satin slightly high-waisted bodice, the net coarsely embroidered with flowers in self-colored braid, deep V shapes of gold lace with small triangular fill-ins of gold-embroidered lace on center front and center back, low neck edged with gold lace, back fastening. Short sleeves with gold bobble edging. Flared skirt with broad center front embroidered panel, high waistband. Slightly trained.

28. The Shooting Party
Cheryl Campbell as Lady Aline Hartlip, 1910

Gold and cream sequined evening dress. Long shift symmetrically patterned with white and gold sequins, gold embroidery, gold beads, and cream bugle beads over caramel silk shift. Wide shoulder straps. Uneven hem, tab at center front and longer in back. Long clear bead tassel hanging from hem. Two trailing strips from center back.

29. The Shooting Party
Judi Bowker as Lady Olivia Lilburn, 1910

"Butterfly" for costume ball scene. Underskirt consisting of layers of palest pink net with random sequins. Dress has a bodice of deep cream duchesse satin with large central hand-painted pink and sequined butterfly motif. Neckline edged with cream lace and pink and silver sequins. Butterflies attached to each shoulder and detachable net wings. Skirts consisting of "petals" of cerise pink stiffened gauze bordered with darker pink edged in tiny silver sequins and random appliqué sequined and hand-painted butterflies and dragonflies. Top layer of cream satin "petals."

Wedding dress. Two-piece ensemble in cream silk. High-waisted jacket with false waistcoat front and high collar faced with pleated net. Trimmed with black piping, buttons, and black clasp on belt. Worn over ankle-length hobble skirt. Matching hat with peaked crown trimmed with wide band of floral embroidery and net.

Kristin Scott Thomas as Lady Sylvia McCordle, 1930s

Cream satin gown with plunging black velvet V at front and back and trailing sash from back of right shoulder. Diamante necklace with three large teardrop stones at center front.

Jacqueline Bisset as Countess Andrenyi, 1930s

Cream and gray printed and figured silk dress. Bias cut with wide shoulder straps. Hem raised at front. Coat of raw cream silk with thick vertical ribs. Wide shawl collar, cuffs. Opening and hem trimmed with cream fur. Cream silk hat with veil. Two sprays of stiff cream feathers from silk bow at center front. Cross-shaped diamante brooch at center front.

Melanie Griffith as Linda Voss, 1950s

One-piece dress. Bodice of cream georgette, top cut straight across at front, slightly lower at back. Hand-painted with multicolored flowers studded with silver beads, sequins,l and diamante. Broad pleated band attached to each side of top, running stole-like around shoulders. Full-length gored skirt of cream gauze, with stiffened underskirt. A narrow panel of floral painted georgette down left side of front.

Madonna as Eva Peron, 1950s
Cerise pink silk full-length New Look-style dress. Full skirt, strapless bodice of diagonally pleated silk. Floor length trapeze coat of heavy cerise pink satin with long bell-shape sleeves and appliqué and beaded floral design down central front opening.

35. Indiana Jones


Little Maharajah costume. Pink/orange/gold organza robe lined with vivid pink silk. Highly decorated with gold metal work, pearls, and embroidery. Jeweled cuffs and jewels on upper sleeves. With heavy gold and bejeweled necklaces. Turban of red and gold silk brocade highly decorated with colorless stones with pearl tassel at right and white feathers at center front.
