Winterthur Library was established in 1952 to furnish staff, students, and the general public with research materials. It has become a recognized center for advanced study and is dedicated to the understanding and appreciation of America's artistic, cultural, social, and intellectual history from colonial times into the twentieth century. The library, located in the Louise du Pont Crowninshield Research Building, is open to all interested readers without appointment or charge, Monday through Friday, from 8:30 am to 4:30 pm; we are closed on legal holidays. Staff welcomes inquiries and will respond in as timely a manner as possible. Photocopy machines are located throughout the library. Slides and photographs of library items may be ordered. The holdings of the library are catalogued in WinterCat, an online catalogue available on-site at Winterthur as well as through the web site. Bibliographic records of books, periodicals, manuscripts, and photographs are added daily to the catalogue, offering researchers an opportunity to inquire about the full range of the library's holdings. In addition, bibliographic records are contributed to the Research Libraries Information Network (RLIN), a national online resource accessible through the Internet and at libraries worldwide. A variety of short- and long-term fellowships are available that support pre- and postdoctoral study as well as research for exhibitions and publications. Fellowships are announced annually in April. Fellows enjoy many staff privileges, including 24-hour access to portions of the library. For details, contact the Advanced Studies Division at 302.888.4649. Overnight lodging is available for a modest fee at Winterthur's Visiting Scholars Residence. For details, contact the Advanced Studies Division at 302.888.4649.
